Welcome to the EHI Afro Hair Care blog - a space designed to educate and inspire. First up - lets talk about length retention and the benefits of hydrolysed proteins

Can't get your afro hair past shoulder length?
A common misconception about type 4 hair is that it cannot grow beyond shoulder length. Let's dispel that myth with three main points:
Afro hair growth is the same rate as other hair types.
Afro hair is more prone to breakage due to its structure.
Strong & healthy hair will retain length.
The structure of afro hair:

Coily in nature = drier hair.
Sebum is a natural, waxy substance produced by the sebaceous glands, forming a barrier on the hair shaft to prevent moisture loss.
Due to the coily nature of afro hair, sebum gets trapped at the scalp and does not travel down the hair shaft. This is explains why type 4 hair rarely becomes oily/greasy.
This lack of sebum means afro hair is drier and more prone to breakage.
Hair breakage arises from defects in the hair shaft - common in dry hair.
How to fix - the key to length retention.
Strengthen the hair by repairing defects in the hair shaft
Add moisture to the hair to prevent dryness and breakage
Maintain hair with low manipulation & keep in a detangled state
Hydrolysed proteins work wonders for type 4 hair - typically found in high quality conditioners or creams. We've created a Rinse-Off conditioner formulated for type 4/ afro hair that is powered by hydrolysed proteins for damage repair and strengthening.
Hydrolysed proteins used in hair care are small molecular fragments of larger proteins, broken down to improve absorption and performance. Their size typically falls into the low molecular weight range, often below 10 kDa (kilodaltons), which allows them to penetrate the hair shaft more effectively than intact proteins
Caring for type 4 hair is easy with the right approach! By focusing on proper care, hydration, and protective styling, you can unlock the beauty of your unique curls without any hassle. Embrace the wonderful characteristics of your hair and establish a routine filled with moisturizing treatments, gentle cleansing, and protective styles. Here are some key points to remember:
Hydration: Keep your hair moisturized to maintain its health and shine.
Gentle Cleansing: Use sulfate-free shampoos to cleanse without stripping natural oils.
Protective Styles: Incorporate styles that protect your hair from damage while allowing it to thrive.
